Then there’s the scene where they’re caught kissing, and a big to-do is made and they are forced to marry. Then the run in with Bryght, while he is sent off to fetch the sordid love l The last time I read this was sometime inI think.

Ms Beverley gets the romance just right: I felt so sorry for Bryght and hated Portia so much by the end, when she finally does right by him it was far too little, much too late. Bryght recognizes her and realizes what has happened–apparently it’s not uncommon.

She reckons Portia, who isn’t reckoned a beauty, has no dowry, and doesn’t love him, will be a millstone around his neck. Fort gets involved, and there’s a big temptinng and that at least was a bit exciting. There are spoilers below but it was such an annoying story, I’m happy to spare you the pain.

If you read the first book in the series you know Bryght was dispatched to this place to retrieve a dirty letter written by a woman he nearly married she jilted him for a richer, titled fellow to her lover. I’m bevdrley you could figure it out if you didn’t do that, but especially after peaking ahead to see who our hero and heroine will be in book 3, I see that the author is laying the groundwork for future romances in the background and subplot of the previous ones. But can he persuade Portia to trust a rich, devastatingly handsome nobleman who appears to be a reckless gamester?


I liked that Phoebe was spunky and irrepressible but for goodness’s sake, I wish she had an ounce or two of self-preservation or even selfishness. Fortunately for him, he is skilful and blessed with good luck firtune and he plans to marry a very rich widow as a back-up plan.

Fortunately, Portia has the good sense to dislike Bryght for a number of reasons, not the least of which is his gaming–she doesn’t trust gamers, especially when she knows he let her brother win a few hands which temmpting him to play deep and that’s what ended with her in the brothel.

The bottom of his barrel comes when he loses too much to the wrong guy, and Portia is forced to compensate for it. I love a feisty heroine but not this stupid, blindly combative one. Stupid Jezebel-style heroines don’t work for me, obviously. Her father ran their estate into the ground because of his addiction to the tables, and temting Oliver has temptiny further disaster in the same way, so her disdain of Bryght is understandable.

Lady Beware As for Nasty Nerissa, I truly hope she eventually gets her comeuppance and that it is icky and very painful.

But view spoiler [not one of the villains in this piece pays any price for the truly vile and cruel things they did. Claire, begins chapter one by going with pistol in hand to confront a housebreaker in the middle of the night.
